It’s August…we mean Rawgust where @rfvs.info and the raw community will be sharing hints, tips and myth busting on feeding your dog a raw diet.

And since it's also Pet Dental Awareness Month in Australia, we thought we would start off with “kibble helps clean teeth'' if this is the case then why does 80% of dogs over 2 years require dental treatment??

In reality kibble is full of starch and when this is mixed with the bacteria in a dogs mouth it creates plaque on their teeth.

Whereas plaque build up is rarely seen in raw-fed dogs and cats because a raw diet does not contain starch and sugars combine this with gnawing on a bone or even one of our Beef or Kangaroo ribs keeps our dog’s teeth clean and healthy.

💩👻A poop that is very solid and pale can be a sign your dog has eaten a lot of bone. This is nothing to worry about, it often happens the day after a dog has eaten a bone and will resolve. It’s not a reason to stop feeding bone, but if your dog’s poop is consistently pale and hard, then reduced the amount of bone.

⚫️🍦If your dog has very dark, “soft serve” poop, this can be a sign it’s had organ meat which is rich and often makes dogs stools softer.

Armed with this knowledge, you can firm up your dog’s poop by including more bone or soften it by feeding more organ meat.

🪱🐜Dogs, like humans pick up tummy bugs from time to time. We often see this happening during periods of prolonged wet weather ⛈💦- such as we have been experiencing in Sydney over the past months. With all the flooding in streams, ditches and puddles there can be run off from sewer systems and drains which can also contain chemical sprays used to control weeds. It’s worth carrying your own water for your dog to drink rather than letting it drink out of puddles and around the base of trees.

If your dog is prone to the odd tummy upset, or hasn’t had a solid poop in living memory, then please consider adding a pre and pro biotic to their food every day.

Let's Talk Poo 💩 (Part 1)

💬A subject that gets a-lot of airtime down at the dog park. As responsible dog owners we are bending down picking it up every single day, often subconsciously making a mental note of the colour, consistency and odour as we do so. Put simply your dog’s poop is the window to their gut health and often the first outward sign of anything going on with their digestive system.

A healthy poop shouldn’t require your dog to strain. However, it should be firm and well formed, mid to dark brown and shouldn’t have too much of an unpleasant odour. 🤩

🟡🟤⚪️The colour and consistency will of course depend on what your dog has been eating. If you feed a variety of proteins and vegetables to your dog, the poop may change accordingly.

Quantity of poop is also worth noting. Raw fed dogs have much less output than kibble fed dogs. This is because of all the indigestible fillers in dry food that are there just provide bulk. Kibble fed dogs not only have much larger poop, it also is much smellier. 🤢

Since the gut is where the nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream to the vital organs it makes sense that your dog's gut health is paramount.
